Hardscaping projects

+ Backyard oasis

Working with a stand of bamboo and otherwise a blank slate, we added sturdy cedar structures to frame the various distinct garden “rooms” within this backyard. Perennial beds with year-round interest complement the raised bed garden area. The hummingbirds, butterflies and bees love this garden!

+ A plant collector’s garden

This garden is a vibrant collage of perennials, roses, ornamental trees, bird-friendly natives, and edibles. We have worked closely with the owner over the years to establish healthy soil and better drainage on this clay bank in North Seattle. All of the stone work, wooden and bamboo trellises, planting and maintenance is done by HAZEL.

+ Mt Baker bank garden

We designed and installed lush, naturalistic plantings to make the best of a steep Seattle bank on a corner lot, to complement a full remodel of a classic craftsman home.

+ Backyard patio installation

This back yard had an uneven, sandy, sloping lawn and the space was overpowered by a high retaining wall. We positioned a beautiful bluestone patio with space enough for outdoor grilling and dining; leveled the lawn for ball play; installed a trellis to hide the concrete retaining wall; and installed a series of gentle steps to ease between the various garden “rooms” we had created.

+ Urban homestead base design

This design for Sound Edible Landscapes created several rooms out of a ho-hum back yard: a patio, a pathway of edibles, a green grass lawn, and a quiet corner — and accommodating uneven ground and some rambunctious dogs.
